Dickson Street theater doesn't care about local music

Last night, me, the Holy Ghost Children, and David's Pegasus were supposed to play at the Dickson Street Theater at around 9. Barry, of DP, went by around 7 to drop some things off. DP was also scheduled to play on Jordan's Local Show, on KXUA, to promote the show. This is something we have done with several bands schedule to play at the Dickson Street Theater, and it has worked quite well. Many people tell me that the only reason they even knew about X show is because they were listening to KXUA, often they've even heard the band. So we were all up at the radio station, I usually do the sound for her so Jordan can concentrate on hosting, when we got a call. The manager at the Dickson Street Theater had CANCELED the show because "none of the bands showed up". This was completely false because the Holy Ghost Children got there around 8 and were supposed to play first! They told Cale of HGC that they had "Been here since 6 and hadn't talked to any of the bands." Which is also false because Barry talked to them when he dropped off his stuff not to mention they were talking to a member of one of the bands right then. They locked up the theater, leaving David's Pegasus's equipment out in the alley way. Luckily we managed to send someone to get that stuff before it was stolen or something.

Lucky for us, we have good friends with houses to offer. Through the wonders of instant mass communication, we were able to reroute around 50 people to the New Deli, and ended up having a pretty kick ass house show. We made up for time by having David's Pegasus play in the kitchen, which was really awesome, so I could be all set up in the living room when Holy Ghost Children were done and skip some set up down time. The show started almost 2 hours late at about 10:40 and ended up ending around 12:30 with only about 5 minutes downtime between bands.

But this post is about how bad the Dickson Street Theater and every other venue in Fayetteville that treats local bands like shit. Not only did they cancel the show for no good reason, and pitch David's Pegasus's stuff out in the alley way, but they also bumped the cover up from $5 which is what they printed on their fliers to $7. They only allow each band 2 guests and 2 drinks a piece. Considering we don't even get paid, that is just absurd. But Dickson Street Theater isn't alone. The Gypsy is also pretty horrible to local bands as well. Last year David's Pegasus had had a show scheduled there for a month and when they showed up to play they had been bumped because a friend of the owner had showed up in town and wanted to play a show. They didn't even bother trying to contact DP they just found out when they showed up that they no longer had a show. That show too was successfully routed to a house, and the owners friend played to relatively no one. JR's has been having some shows there recently, but they are always so awkward. That place is great as a bar with a jukebox for music, and really great when someone is scheduled to just DJ, but as a venue is just ridiculous. It's really small and there is no place for the bands to set up. They usually end up being in the doorway causing bewildered patrons to duck between the guitars as they try and come in.

There really is no place for shows in Fayetteville. They have forced us into the basements and living rooms of our friends. We could have probably made the Dickson Street Theater some money last night, but they decided to be jerks for some reason. I really do not understand a venue whose business model is turning crowds of paying thirsty customers away.

Haven't posted in so long

Seems like I have all but abandoned this blog, I am really going to make an effort though to start posting here again about all the stuff that I'm doing. I think one of the biggest problems is that I had bought a camera that I intended to use heavily for this blog, and then I lost it at a show.

Anyways, I've played a couple of really great shows since the last time I posted, and I have one next week.

I have also started doing a political show on UATV called Campus Crossfire. Here is last week:

Thats all I got, I swear I will update more from now on.

Longwood Inudstries

I've recently been trying to sell a '97 Chevy Blazer that I inherited from my sister. So, I placed an ad in the ArkDemGaz last Thursday, and the ad started running today. Then this morning I got this voice mail:

http://comp.uark.edu/~sfeild/Longwood.wav

A couple of things about this offer struck me as rather odd. Was that Allen gave me a 1-800 number to call him back at. This should always be a red flag because 1-800 can be called toll free, even from a pay phone, any where in the country. This means that Allen and Longwood Industries could be anywhere in the country. Second of all he was very vague. He sees that I'm selling my "vehicle", rahter than my Chevy Blazer, which is what any normal person would say. Even though it sounds rather unscripted and personal, vagueness is always a sign that something is generic, or meant for anyone. My "vehicle" could be a unicycle or spaceship! Thirdly, and most importantly Allen actually says that Longwood Industries is a 501(c)(3) company. If you aren't familiar with what that means, it's tax lingo for a charity or nonprofit organization. The Red Cross and the Goodwill are examples of 501(c)(3)s. This is important because the National Do Not Call list doesn't apply to 501(c)(3)s. So is Longwood industries some kind of nonprofit charitable organization that sends out automated telemarketing messages to match up people interested in buying and selling used cars out of the goodness of their hearts? It dose not appear so. Their website is easily found with a Google search.

www.longwoodautos.com/

For $99.00 Longwood industries will sell your car on www.biglots.com and www.autohopper.com. How nice of them. If the car doesn't sell you get your some of your money back, maybe. I couldn't figure out how a company that has the audacity to claim that they are a a 501(c)(3). So I took a look at the "About Us" section.

"Longwood Autos is a division of Longwood Industries, Inc. We are a 501c3 company based in Bedford, Virginia. Our company was established over 25 years ago for the purpose of providing economic opportunities to disadvantaged and mentally handicapped individuals. We accomplish this by offering a wide variety of products and services from textile manufacturing to online affiliate partnerships. Longwood has experienced tremendous growth since its inception and has grown to a workforce of over 140 employees."

So, if they have been around for 25 years then it should be pretty easy to find information on them. So I started looking around Bedford, Virginia for clues. Sure enough I found Longwood Industries listed on a website called "Mental Health of America" as some kind of textile employer of disabled residents in Bedford, Virgina.

http://www.mhacv.org/Resources/developmental_disabilities.htm

Listing this website: http://www.longwoodinc.com/

There on the front page is the used car scam complete with the same 1-800 I got from the original voicemail. Seems like this get's weirder and weirder. Longwood Inc is a textile company that supposedly hires mostly disabled people and is listed as a charitable/nonprofit organization. Why are they trying to help me sell my used car? I went ahead and shot an email to to the director of MHACV.org alerting them of the scam as well as informing them that I'm covering it on my blog.

At this point I found Longwood listed on Ripoffreport.com.

http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/211/ripoff0211077.htm

This report confirmed several things that I had already suspected. Firstly that Longwood industries is abusing the United States tax code for the purposes of getting around the National Do No Call List. They also seem to believe that Longwood Industries owns Biglots.com. I can't really find any information to verify that. Besides, As far as I can see Biglots.com is legitimate in that if you pay them the $90.00 you will get a car ad on their site. However, you will also probably have to go to small claims court to get their guaranteed refund when your car doesn't actually sell. This isn't so much as a scam as it is overpriced bad business. I am much more concerned with the Longwood Inudstries who are blatantly taking advantage of the tax code to scam people out of money.

I'm sure I will post with more information soon.

Rock A Fire!

This is one of the coolest things I've found in a while. This guy some how got a hold of an original Rock A Fire Explosion show, and now spends his odd hours programming shows for fun. The songs he picks are particularly great, but he does have lots of videos where he details how the show works. For someone really into animatronic bands from defunt 1980s pizza restraunt arcades for kids (like me), this is ENDLESSLY fascinating!

The Way We Touch

This is something I've been meaning to post for a while but never gotten around to it. It's me playing a month or two ago at the Pegasus Ranch.

Ill Ease - Greenlight Bulb - 7-23-07

This is an extremely dark and blurry video of Ill Ease from last night at the Green Light Bulb
